Sunscreen 101 — Why SPF is Non-Negotiable
Share
If there's one skincare product you should never skip, it's sunscreen. Sun protection is the single most effective anti-aging, anti-hyperpigmentation, and skin-health tool available — and it costs far less than corrective treatments.
Why Sunscreen Matters
UV radiation from the sun is responsible for up to 80% of visible skin aging. It causes dark spots, fine lines, uneven skin tone, and in serious cases, skin cancer. In Kenya, where we enjoy abundant sunshine year-round, daily SPF is absolutely essential.
SPF Explained
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%. For daily use, SPF 30–50 is ideal. For extended outdoor activities, go for SPF 50+.
Broad Spectrum vs. Regular
Always choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen. This means it protects against both UVA rays (aging) and UVB rays (burning). Regular sunscreens may only protect against UVB.
How to Apply Sunscreen Correctly
- Apply as the last step of your morning skincare routine, before makeup.
- Use about a teaspoon (or two finger-lengths) for your face and neck.
- Reapply every 2 hours if you're outdoors or sweating.
Sunscreen for All Skin Tones
A common myth is that darker skin tones don't need sunscreen. This is false. Melanin provides minimal natural SPF (around SPF 13), which is not sufficient protection. Everyone — regardless of skin tone — benefits from daily sunscreen use.
Make sunscreen your non-negotiable daily habit. Your future skin will thank you.
